• • Jul JU Ju WLU 1 c r J 1 - Uil v~
San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District
Media Release
For Immediate Release: Contact: Josette Merced Deilo
Nov. 7, 1997 Public Education
Digital media pager (209) 446-7580
District/igf►ts lire under wood burning prograrn
Fresno, CA -- Fall is in the air, arid with it carnes fireplace and wood stove use. On Nov, 12,
the Valley Air District will start the annual Residential Wood Buming Curtailment program to
encourage Valley residents to reduce the amount of air pollution caused by fireplace and wood
stove us6wood smoke is a health risk because it contains small panicles of soot, ash and
toxic aerosols which can bypass the body's natural filtering system and lodge in the lungs,
causing or aggravating respiratory ailments.
As in previous years, the District will use a signal light to notify Valley residents of prevailing air
quality conditions, and alert them of days when conditions will not withstand wood buming. A
green signal indicates no curtailment is being requested, a yellow light informs Valley residents
that only those with EPA-certified wood or pellet stoves should bum, and red Indicates poor air
quality and everyone should refrain from using their wood-burning devices.
While the air pollution levels which trigger these curtailment levels will remain unchanged, due
to better forecasting and air quality analysis capabilities, this year the District expects to
forecast and declare more yellow days than in the past.
Evan Shipp, District meteorologist and supervisor of air quality analysis, explained that the
increased yellow days will come a:, a result of more sophisticated forecasting techniques and
(more)
