Equipment <br /> mobilized included a 320L excavator, one D9L and two D7 <br /> catepillar dozers and several water trucks . <br /> September 17, 1996 <br /> O/S Personnel : 1-OSC, 2-USCG, 2-START, 6-CET, 6-CDF <br /> Weather: Temps 801s, strong winds from the northeast <br /> The excavation revealed several hundred buried tires burning <br /> in a small side canyon. The burning tires were removed and <br /> extinguished by CDF fire fighters . All burning tires were removed <br /> and the excavation was flooded as a precautionary measure . <br /> September 18 , 1996 <br /> O/S Personnel : 1-OSC, 2-USCG, 2-START, 6-CET, 6-CDF <br /> Weather: Temps 801s, strong winds from the northeast <br /> The ERCS contractor commenced excavation of burning tires <br /> along the east-facing slope of the fire break. The excavator <br /> chased the burning tires through the embankment and into the <br /> landfill . All burning tires were removed and extinguished with <br /> foam. The fires appeared to be extinguished, however, the <br /> infrared camera readings taken at 19 : 00 revealed a single small <br /> hotspot in a cut along the exposed portion of the landfill . The <br /> excavation was flooded with 9, 000 gallons of water and operations <br /> were secured for the night . <br /> September 19, 1996 <br /> O/S Personnel : 1-OSC, 2-USCG, 1-START, 6-CET, 6-CDF <br /> Weather: Temps 801s, strong winds from the Northeast . <br /> Infrared camera readings at 05 : 30 continued to detect a <br /> small hotspot within the landfill . Excavation activities <br /> continued throughout the day. An enormous quantity of material <br /> consisting of burning tires, decomposed tires, metal and dirt was <br /> removed from the excavation. By 15 : 00, it was estimated that <br /> several thousand cubic yards of material had been removed. Dozers <br /> were used to grade the material down the bottom of the canyon. <br /> There was no longer any evidence of burning tires based on visual <br /> and infrared readings . The CDF was demobed. <br /> September 20, 1996 <br /> A final infrared survey revealed no elevated temperatures in <br /> the landfill area. ERCS completed equipment decon operations . All <br />
