Qua-litatIv Field Screening
A Photovac TIP using a photoionlzation detector (PID) was
used to screen each sample .collected in the field, The
PID measures total volatile hydrocarbons in air in parts
per million by volume in relation to a selected standard.
The standard used for this investigation was a 5o ppm
pentane calibration gas. Calibration was performed daily
prior to and during .its field use, The PYD was also used
to measure the total hydrocarbon concentration in the
_ breathing zone for protection of the field crew. The
screening procedure consisted of scraping the top soil
layer collected in tlae middle tube to expose fresh soil
and scanning the vapors emitted from that sample. PID
readings were recorded on the boring logs and
automatically recorded using a strip chart recorder. The
results of the PID field screening are shown on Table 2
and the bore logs (Plate Nos. 9 through 12).
E. Water Sampling Procedure
Water samples were collected from monitoring wells MW--1
through MW--4 on-August_-13,--1985--and_Nov ember---15,- 1985. -- ------ - ----- ---
The wells were first sampled with a clear plastic bailer
-' and .the samples were visually inspected for product layer
I
