28 December 1999
AGE-NC Project No. 97-0351
3.2. SOIL EXCAVATION
For the reduction of MTBE and petroleum-hydrocarbon impacted soil in the former west UST area,
contaminated soil in UST excavation will be excavated, sampledand transported to a licensed
landfill facility for disposal. Based upon laboratory results of soil samples collected during removal
procedures, an additional 250 to 350 yards of impacted soil will also be removed from the floor of
the excavation and side wall of the former UST excavation-and transported for disposal. Soil will
be excavated to a minium depth of 15 feet below surface grade (bsg)..The total volume anticipated
for removal and disposal is estimated to be approximately 350•cubic yards.
During excavation activities, excavated soil will be screened for volatile organic compounds using
an organic vapor monitor (OVM). Excavated soil that appears visibly stained or has a petroleum
hydrocarbon odor will be considered impacted.
3.3. SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
A total of up 10 soil samples will be collected from the excavation will be submitted for laboratory
analysis. Following State of California Regional Water Quality Board, Tri-Regional Board
recommendations, soil samples will be collected from the base and each side wall of the "new"
excavation at a minimum interval of every 20 linear feet. Soil samples will be collected from the
base of the excavation at a minimum of one sample for every:400 square feet of excavation area.
Field procedures for collection of soil samples are presented in Section 4.2.
Soil samples will also be collected from the stockpiled soil from the excavation. For soil disposal
characterization, a 4:1 composite soil sample will be collected.from every 100 yards of soil
excavated.
Each soil sample will be analyzed by a State of California Department of Health Services (DHS)-
certified laboratory for the following constituents-
• TPH-g by EPA Method 8015 Modified;
• BTEX by EPA Method 8020; and
• Fuel oxygenates including methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE),tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA), di-
isopropyl ether (DIPS), ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE) and tertiary-amyl methyl ether
(TAME) by EPA Method 8260 Modified.
The laboratory report for soil analyses, testing methods, laboratory quality assurance/quality control
(QA/QC) reports, and sample chain of custody documentation will be presented in a report with
findings and recommendations.
Advanced GcoEnviron mental,Inc.
