02 April 2018 AdvancedGeo
AGE Project No. 18-4357 Environmental
The trenches are proposed to be 18-24 inches wide, a minimum of five feet bsg in depth
and approximately five feet in length. If no more than 1 cubic yard of waste is encountered,
then the excavation spoil waste (impacted media removed below the stabilized soil cover)
will be considered de minimus.
If hazardous waste is encountered based on laboratory analysis, waste will be stockpiled
on plastic(10 mil) sheeting for evaluation and disposed at an appropriate landfill. A profile
for hazardous waste disposal will be prepared and the effected media will be transported
to an appropriately permitted disposal facility. Based on the current soil sampling,
including stockpile soil samples, hazardous waste was only encountered in sample ID-1
at the site.
Soil samples will be field-screened using an organic vapor meter (OVM). The trenches
excavated by the backhoe/excavator will be screened using a OVM (four gas) meter
capable of measuring concentrations of methane, hydrogen sulfide, oxygen, lower
explosive limit and potentially carbon monoxide. The trenches will be backfilled with native
soil from the site or clean imported fill
AGE anticipates that approximately 8 additional trenching (sampling) locations will be
required to adequately fully define the horizontal and vertical extent of the
waste/contamination. Additional trenches may be established in surrounding areas of
waste discovery; thus, increasing the total number of trenches, to generate a more
accurate locations and thickness of the potentially buried waste soil. Under the sampling
protocol, AGE field staff may change individual sampling locations based on site-specific
field conditions (obstructions, visible signs of contaminated soils or other factors).
Proposing additional trenches based on field data will only be conducted with approval of
the oversight.
Procedures for collection and analysis of soil samples, equipment decontamination and
sample handling are presented below. Photographs will be taken at each sampling
location and at surrounding areas. The photos will verify information entered in the field
logbook. Each photo taken will be written in the trench-log or logbook with the
approximate time, date, and location.
3.3. SOIL SAMPLING — TRENCHING
The sampling at trenching locations will involve the use of a backhoe, which will trench
through the current soil backfill or native cap, past or through any waste discovered and
down to native soil beneath.
Soil samples will be collected from the soil column at the base of the trenches which
demonstrate waste or are required to evaluate the lateral extent of the waste; soil sample
collection will be determined based on the quantity of contamination encountered in each
