Underground Utilities
If drilling equipment is to be used, BSK will attempt to locate underground utility locations prior to
commencement of drilling activities. Resources may include site plans, utility companies, Under-
ground Service Alert(USA) (800-642-2444), and had auguring methods.
Traffic Hazards
Typically, UST sites are in or near areas of subject to hrough pedestrian and/or vehicular traffic,
such as driveways or service areas. Traffic cones an or barricades are used to exclude unauthorized
persons and vehicles from the excavation and work/e)clusion zone.
Chemical Hazards
Gasoline and diesel fuels are composed principally of aliphatic and aromatic compounds. Benzene,
an aromatic compound, is considered to be the most s gnificant health risk because of its suspected
carcinogenic potential. Waste oil (used crankcase oil) has a significant inorganic lead component.
Principal exposure routes for benzene and other gasol ne and diesel constituents include the
following:
Inhalation of vapors and contaminated dust
Skin absorption
Ingestion of contaminated soil and water, espe Tally if poor personal hygiene is
practiced
i Skin and/or eye contact with contaminated soi or water
Benzene vapors present a potential health risk that needs to be monitored and controlled. The
current Cal/OSHA PEL for benzene is 1 ppm based on an 8-hour time weighted average (TWA). A
maximum concentration of 100 ppm of petroleum hydrocarbon vapors in the work breathing zone is
recommended without respiratory protection. A phot ionization detector(PID) calibrated daily to
100 ppm isobutylene will be routinely used to monito petroleum hydrocarbon vapors in the work
breathing zone. If persistent petroleum hydrocarbon Napors in excess of 100 ppm are observed,
appropriate respirators will be donned. Personnel shoLild work upwind or cross wind of the drill rig,
if possible.
Skin contact with potentially contaminated soil or gra indwater can be minimized by wearing
personal protective clothing.
A-10
