ITEC N
S O ROL
Entry into hazardous areas is limited to individuals who must work in those areas and are qualified to
do so. Authorized visitors may be allowed to enter th work/exclusion zone only if they have read
and understand this document and have agreed to abide by the requirements set forth, have the
requisite OSHA certifications, are willing to follow the instructions of the SSO, and have been
informed of the potential hazards and risks.
Orange traffic cones and/or barricades are used to del neate an exclusion zone around the work site,
including the excavation and power equipment. Barriers should be set at a 25-foot radius (as
practical) around the site.
At the end of a workday, excavations and work sites are secured to prevent accidental ingress by
persons on foot or'in vehicles. On sites where a drill 'g is used, borings are covered or otherwise
secured. Decontamination fluids are drummed, and the drums are properly marked and labeled. Soil
cuttings are placed on and covered with plastic sheeting, and the sheeting labeled. Labeling includes
at least the date, boring number, content of drum (i.e., soil, water, etc.), suspected contaminant, and
depth interval, if appropriate.
DECONTAMINATIO i PROCEDURES
A high-pressure hot water washer is used for decontamination. Shovels, auger flights, and other
equipment are decontaminated by brushing them and rinsing with the pressure washer.
Boots and gloves are cleaned with a stiff bristle brush detergent, and water. Tyvek®coveralls and
gloves are drummed on site and disposed of with drill cuttings. Waste and spent decontamination
solutions are contained in drums on site.
Respirators are washed, sanitized, and stored in a clean plastic bag or case. Each employee is
r responsible for cleaning and maintaining his/her respirator.
SAFE WORK PIP ACTICES
The following general guidelines are presented.
Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, and smoking are prohibited in the
contaminated or potentially contaminated area or where the possibility for the transfer
of contamination exists.
t • A-12
