INFORMATION SHEET
CITY OF STOCKTON
AUSTIN ROAD LANDFILL
CLASS III .LANDFILLS
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
The City of Stockton presently owns and operates a Class 11-2 waste disposal
site in Section 3, TIS, R7E, MDB&M. This is approx1mately six miles southeast
of Stockton, on Austin Road. The site consists of approximately 180 acres; 135
of which are north of the North Fork of South Little Johns Creek, and 45 of
which are south of the creek. Operations began around 1955. These revised WDRs
replace Board Order 77-288 and reclassify the site from Class 11-2 to a Class
III landfill under the new Subchapter 15 requirements.
The landfill accepts municipal solid waste from the City of Stockton. The site
is currently accepting more than 350,000 cubic yards per year from commercial
haulers in the City of Stockton. The City proposed to accept on a one-time
basis , approximately 20,000 cubic yards of digested sewage sludge from the
City' s wastewater treatment plant in 1989, and to accept approximately 5,000
cubic yards of this sludge on a yearly basis thereafter. The sludge will be
used in the foundation layer of the final cap.
The first water-bearing formation is approximately 70 feet below the base of the
landfill , with the hydraulic gradient to the north/northeast. The beneficial
uses of this ground water are domestic, municipal , and agricultural . The
facility receives an average of approximately 14 inches of precipitation per
year, with the 100-year, 24-hour precipitation event of 6.17 inches.
Pacific Energy Inc. operates a methane gas recovery system under contract with
the City of Stockton. The power plant contains an 1100 horsepower, gas fired,
internal combustion engine which drives an 800 KV induction generator. The
power plant can produce up to 760 kilowatts per hour' of electrical power, which
is sold to Pacific Gas and Electric under a long-term contract. The system has
an estimated life of 15 to 20 years. Condensate from the system is returned to
Austin Road Landfill via a leach line placed at the upper trash/fill interface.
JKT:,j.j
