Always Work Safe
Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) provide detailed information on products and their chemical content
including potential hazards and protective measures. You can review the SDSs available in your
store binder, or by contacting our vendor “3E” for assistance at 1-800-451-8346, or online. (See
resources at the end of this guide.)
The quickest way to learn about the safe use and handling of a product is to check its
label. The label typically carries one of the following “signal words” to alert the user to
potential hazards:
• “DANGER” is the most hazardous, signaling a product capable of causing serious injury or
death on its own – without exposure to heat, water or other chemicals to trigger a reaction.
• “WARNING” means the product could potentially cause serious injury or death, but would
likely require another chemical, water or heat to react.
• “CAUTION” is used on products containing chemicals that could potentially result in
moderate injury.

Many potentially hazardous products are also labeled with symbols or “pictograms” like those
shown below. These are the most common characteristics found with our retail products.

Safety Basics
• Read the label or check the SDS for a damaged chemical product before handling or using it.
• Never mix chemicals. Incompatible chemicals can create serious health hazards such as
noxious or corrosive fumes, fires and explosions.
• Always wear disposable gloves and safety glasses when processing waste or cleaning up a
hazardous spill. When finished, thoroughly wash your hands and arms up to the elbows.
• If chemical splashes on your skin, flush the area with water for several minutes.
• If chemical splashes in your eyes, flush eyes with water for 15-20 minutes and seek medical
assistance if needed.
• Report all incidents to your manager.

Corrosives can eat through
metal, burn skin, and create
vapors.
Flammables can create fire
hazards as well as harmful
vapors.
Reactives can explode or create
poisonous gas when in contact
with other chemicals.
Toxics can be poisonous
to people and other
living things.
Hazardous Waste Quick Reference Guide 2 April 2019, ver 1.0
