Storing Hazardous Waste Safely
Waste is processed and stored in the Hazardous Waste
Accumulation Area in the back room. Waste is scanned,
placed in heavy self-sealing plastic bags, and stored by
waste category in separate totes. This helps prevent
incompatible chemicals from mixing together. Our vendor
picks-up waste periodically and transports it to a disposal
facility.
The hazardous waste categories and their abbreviations are
listed below. These categories are shown on the individual
tote labels.
• AF: Aerosols, Flammables, Combustibles
• CA: Corrosive Acids
• CB: Corrosive Bases
• OX: Oxidizers
• STOU: State-regulated Waste, also includes Toxics
• UW: Universal Waste
Supplies
The following supplies should always be available at the waste station:
• Disposable gloves (of sufficient weight)
• Safety glasses/goggles
• Hazardous Waste Quick Reference Guide
• Company Hazardous Waste Poster: “How to Properly Handle and
Dispose of Retail Product Waste”
• Waste Category Guide
• Plastic totes with latching/locking lids
• Sealable plastic bags in multiple sizes
• Tote labels for each category (and marker or pen to complete them)
• Absorbent or kitty litter
• Broom and dustpan

Hazardous Waste Quick Reference Guide 3 April 2019, ver 1.0
