99 CENTS ONLY STORES LLC
4000 Union Pacific Avenue
City of Commerce, CA 90023
USA
www.99only.com

Store 177:
#106 – Same as prior store
#106 – (For all Stores)
Employees have completed standard Hazardous Waste Handling training. [Rosters attached] In addition to
completing the training module, our Regional Trainer visited each store and conducted additional training with the
core staff. This focus of this training was waste classification.
System – We partner with a company named UL-Wercs who has a large database of UPC product information
including Hazardous Waste Classification. On a monthly basis we submit our items list to them and they update the
Haz Codes on our list (if available). We then update our system.
For inventory control we must account for any damaged item before it is thrown away through a process we refer to
as scrapping. Our Handheld scanners have a function during the scrap process that flags items that are classified as
Hazardous waste and notifies the employee that this item is hazardous and should not be thrown in the trash, it
should be placed in the “##” tote, indicating the correct Haz Code. As a safeguard, items that do not have a haz code
identifier, but are in certain categories like cleansers and detergents, are flagged as “potentially Hazardous” for these
items, during the scrap process the employee receives a warning indicating, the item Might be hazardous, confirm
before throwing away, the employee must then make a waste determination.
Procedure – Employees are instructed to first follow the Handheld scanner as a primary source of Haz classification.
• When the scanner provides the haz code, the item should be placed in the designated tote, accordingly.
• If the scanner does not provide the haz code, only a warning, the employee must then use the product label,
product description, examples poster, and/or sds to make a determination.
• The item must be bagged and placed in the designated tote.
• The chemical resistant bag acts as a secondary containment device to double segregate waste even within
the same tote, this prevents comingling of incompatibles.
• When our hauler arrives, to pick up the hazardous waste, they sort each tote and repackage to DOT standard
for hauling to the TSDF.

Please contact me directly if you have any further questions

Edgar Flores
Manager, Compliance

Cell 323-919-3290
Office 323-881-9950 x 1383
Fax 323-729-3455
4000 Union Pacific Avenue
City of Commerce, CA 90023
edgar.flores@99only.com
