Collecting, Processing and Recycling UNIVERSAL WASTE
If my facility produces Universal Wastes, what do
have to do about them?
The video describes many of the key elements of a Universal Waste
management program.
To summarize,if you elect to manage your wastes as Universal Wastes,
you must comply with the following requirements:
1 . Collect and accumulate your Universal Wastes on-site. Do not
dilute, treat or dispose of these wastes on-site. Do not throw these
wastes away along with normal sanitary wastes. Do not allow these
wastes to be disposed of in a sanitary (municipal, county or indus-
trial) landfill.
2. Package or containerize Universal Wastes that are susceptible to
damage, breakage or leakage. Accumulation containers must be
structurally sound, not show any evidence of leakage and must be
kept closed except when adding or removing wastes. Often the
original shipping container (if still in good condition) is adequate
for accumulation of wastes.
3, Accumulate your wastes in a protected location such as a closet,
secured room, cabinet or bin.
,4. Label each package or container of Universal Waste with a proper
label or marking. The words "Universal Waste", or "Waste" or
"Used" along with the type of waste ("Lamps", 'Batteries", etc.)
should appear on the label. Some states also require additional
wording on some labels.
Y. Have available all the emergency response equipment, personal
protective equipment and trained personnel needed to respond to
any spill, release or accident involving your Universal Wastes.
4
Leader Guide:eviscpruc_vod
