6.0 Description of Operations
Sand, limestone, soda ash and cullet (recycled glass); the major raw materials;
are received from suppliers by truck. The major raw materials are unloaded and
stored in bins which are a part of the batch house. Minor raw materials such as
colorants and decolorizers, are received in bags, pails, or drums. To prepare an
un-melted batch, the specific components of a given glass type are precisely
measured and mixed in the Batch House. The un-melted batch is conveyed to
furnace feeders and then into the furnace melters. The solid batch material floats
in a pool of molten glass initially and gradually melts as it moves through the
melter at approximately 2,700 degrees F. After melting, the glass is conditioned
and distributed to forming machines which mold and blow molten gobs into
containers. After the container is formed, it passes through a Lehr oven for
annealing. Quality control tests are performed on the finished product before it is
packed for storage or shipment. The glass manufacturing process is illustrated in
Figure 1.
7.0 SOURCES OF HAZARDOUS WASTE
Due to the usage of natural products, glass manufacturing does not routinely
generate large quantities of hazardous waste. The following is a summary of
hazardous wastes generated at this plant as a result of routine operations.
Oil and Water
Oily Solids
Nickel Oxide Colorant and Stirrers
Electrostatic Precipitator (EP) Dust
Sodium Hydroxide and Oil
Aqueous Parts Washer Solution
8.0 IDENTIFICATION OF "MAJOR" HAZARDOUS WASTES GENERATED
By definition, major hazardous waste stream means each hazardous waste that
constitutes over 5% of the plant's total routinely generated hazardous waste. By
this definition, the following are major hazardous waste streams based on the
plant's 2014 hazardous waste management activity.
Used oil
Furnace repair brick
EP Dust
Quantities of all hazardous waste generated by the plant in 2018 and 2018 major
hazardous waste streams are summarized in Appendix A.
