9.0 SOURCES AND CURRENT WASTE MANAGEMENT APPROACHES
EP DUST
Electrostatic Precipitator (EP) dust is generated by the EP System. The EP dust
consists of furnace particulate and absorbent (trona) used for control of sulfur
oxides (SOx). EP dust is recycled into the batch materials. Excess EP dust is
disposed as hazardous waste due to the presence of chromium, selenium, and
lead.
Used Oil and Oily Water
Oil and water are generated from a number of sources. Most of the oil is from oil
skimmers associated with the plant's water recycling system. Skimmers remove
machine and lubricating oils from the recirculating water before it returns to the
process or stored in temporary fixed axel storage tanks (Sumps). Waste oil also
results from the maintenance of process and mobile equipment. Waste oil and
water are transported off-site for either recycling, treatment and/or disposal.
Oily Solids
Oily solids include miscellaneous oil contaminated materials such as mold
swabs, oily rags, and absorbent materials used for spill recovery. Swabs are
generated at the forming machines where they are used to apply lubricant on to
the molds. Oily rags are generated primarily in the forming department and
maintenance shop. These oily solids are shipped to a recycling firm, which
extracts the oil for reuse. Treated absorbent materials are recycled for reuse.
Treated swab heads and other unusable treated debris are discarded as non-
hazardous waste by the recycling firm.
Sodium Hydroxide:
Sodium hydroxide is used to clean machine parts. The waste generated during
this process includes sodium hydroxide and oil. This material is transported off-
site for recovery/reclamation and/or disposal.
This is not a major waste stream generated for 2018.
Aqueous Parts Washer Solution
Aqueous parts wash solution has replaced petroleum naptha, chlorinated
solvents and alkaline cleaners previously used for parts washing. It is not
hazardous in its pure state but may become hazardous in use due to the
accumulation of contaminants. Rather than test each individual washer solution,
all aqueous wash solution is presumed to be hazardous.
This is not a major waste stream generated for 2018.
