Hazardous Waste Quick Reference Guide 4 May 2019

Start with Identifying Waste vs. Sellable Product
Items with minor damage that do not impact the use of the product, may be marked down for
sale at a reduced price. “Minor damage” can be items with crushed corners, some items with
partial content, or a single missing piece (for example, packages of batteries or tea lights where
one item has been removed).

Only Store Managers/Assistant Store Managers are allowed to process reduced items.
We must be sure that we DO NOT sell…

NEVER SELL ITEMS THAT HAVE
BEEN IDENTIFIED AS HAZARDOUS WASTE.

Yellow Dot Program: Keeping Waste Out of the Trash/Dumpster
Hazardous waste can never end up in the trash or dumpster.
To ensure that hazardous waste from your store does not
end up in the dumpster, the SM or ASM is responsible for
visually inspecting each trash bag, box, or loose item, prior
to it being placed in the dumpster. After the SM or ASM
visually inspects each bag, box, or item for hazardous waste,
he/she must write the date and his/her initials on a yellow
sticker and place the sticker on the bag, box or item.

The PDT (scan gun) or the company’s Waste Category Guide should be used when inspecting
trash to assist with the identification of hazardous waste.
Opened or expired
medications...
Items without
labels...
Aerosols that don’t
spray...
Or electronics that
don’t work.
Managing Hazardous Waste
