The complainant alleges that SKS Enterprises is creating an
environment of excessive fly breeding and the flies are creating a nuisance on the complainants property.
A site visit to SKS Enterprises by the EHD on May 24, 2006 verified the presence of chicken manure, fly
larvae, fly pupae and adult house flies.
Chicken houses 1, 2 and 3 were in use and full of laying hens. SKS reports that 39,000 chickens are in
each house. A moderate number of adult house flies were observed in the houses. The dirt floor below the
chicken cages contained a mixture of chicken manure, feed and water. Fly larvae were observed in several
locations in the moist manure.
Chicken houses 4 and 5 were not in use but still contained chicken cages. A moderate number of adult
house flies were observed in the houses. The dirt floor below the chicken cages contained a mixture of
chicken manure and water. Fly larvae were observed in several locations in the moist manure.
The concrete pits used to store chicken manure next to chicken houses 4 and 5 were full of manure even
though the houses were empty. The manure in one of the pits was dry enough to support fly breeding and
contained fly larvae.
Chicken house 6 was in use and full of laying hens. SKS reports that 90,000 chickens are in this house.
The floor below the cages was covered with a 9 to 18 inch layer of chicken manure. The manure contained
fly larvae.
The open manure pit, behind the Honen 9 building, is used to store manure generated by houses 1-6. The
pit was approximately five feet deep with a six inch layer of moist manure floating on top of the liquid. A
moderate number of adult house flies were observed near the pit. Fly larvae and pupae were seen around
the edges of the pit.
page I of 2
