4
RENS fly letter
Terminator Jars and at least 5 fly bait stations on each side of the bunker. Suggest that
the fly stations be tied together in pairs so that the two fly stations hang on either side of
the concrete bunker like a pair of saddlebags. By replacing one or two fly bait stations a
week we should be able to keep the fly population down to a manageable number.
When buildings 1 — 3, & 6 are empty of birds, that we remove the material out of the
bunker and compost the material. First we will need to pump the liquid material out of
the bunker. Next, remove the solids from the bunker and compost. The entire area will
then have to be inspected so that all organic debris in and around the bunker is
removed. General fly control measures (fly bait and fly jars) will be in place during this
time period.
The adjacent overflow pond will need to be drained and the organic material removed
and composted as well or spread over the fields in a thin layer and disced into the soil if
approved by E.H.D.
General comments;
By addressing the manure bunker, overflow pond and making an attempt at reducing fly
propagation and introducing adult fly control measures, we should be able to make a
good impact at reducing fly numbers. In addition, we will need to place additional fly
bait stations in and around buildings 1 — 5 and 6 as well as placing fly terminator jars
adjacent to the said buildings as well as between the buildings 1 —5 and the neighbors
residence. The fly bait stations and Terminator jars will need to be inspected and
addressed weekly to ensure that we continue to make an impact on fly reduction.
On my next visit I would like to inspect the Hone facility to see what progress has been
made in implementation the above control measures. Should you have additional
questions please let me know.
Sincerely,
Mark C. Bland, DVM, MS, ACPV
CC: Rolando Calderon, SKS Production Manager
