r
REHS fly letter
Page 2 of 3
Recommend that we continue to apply residual fly insecticide spray underneath the
dropping boards twice a week. Please make sure that we record and keep on file, all
use of insecticide spray.
House 6;
It is my understanding that building 6 will be empty of birds in February of 2007 and that
the building will no longer be used to house birds after this flock. Therefore we need to
look at several temporary solutions to reduce fly propagation. Several suggestions are;
Recommend that approximately 8 fans (36 —48 inches), 4 on each side of the
house, be hung in the pit area of building 6. Place a large piece of plywood over
the box frame to help keep droppings from getting into the motor and fan blades.
The purpose of the fans is to dry out the manure pit area and reduce the ability of
the flies to propagate in the wet manure. If physically possible, apply a residual
fly insecticide spray to the manure surface every other day.
You may want to look into using Larvadex@ on the surface of the manure as a
spray every other week. This will help augment your initial fly control measures
by reducing the ability for the fly larva to pupate into an adult fly.
When the flock currently housed in building 6 is removed in the spring of 2007,
building 6 will be cleaned and disinfected. The manure will be pushed out and
composted and not placed in the manure bunker if possible.
General fly control measures;
Recommend that we place 10 — 15 Fly Terminator Jars between buildings 1 —6 and the
resident's homes that are complaining about flies. The jars should be serviced initially
about every 3 —4 days. Based on fly numbers, I would expect that we would eventually
service the "Fly"jars once a week. One group of Fly jars should be placed in and in
close proximately of buildings 1 —6. A second group of jars should be placed about 50
— 100 feet in the direction of the residential homes in question.
Manure Bunker;
It is my understanding that SKS Enterprises is not yet in a position to compost the liquid
manure from either building 1 — 3 and 6. Therefore we will need to continue to move
this manure to the bunker area.
Recommend broadcasting Poultry Litter Treatment (PLT) over the manure in the bunker
where possible and placing heavy plastic over 2/3 of the remaining manure leaving an
opening in case we are unable to compost the manure from buildings 1 — 3 and need to
place this manure in the bunker. Periodically spray larvacide and insecticide over the
manure that is not covered by the plastic. In addition, recommend that we add 10
