AL
Maldonado indicated that they would start using their own field. Mr. McClellon told him that as
long as he was sure that it was an approved activity,to go ahead.
On December 2, 2005,the EHD met with Renaldo Calderon,of SKS Farms. The purpose of the
meeting was to determine the approved methods for chicken manure handling. Mr. Calderon was
concerned, because the dry pad method was not going to be allowed. Mr. McClellon asked Mr.
Calderon if the manure was removed from the dry pad area after it was dried. Mr. Calderon
indicated that the manure was not removed. Mr. McClellon asked Mr. Calderon if there was any
crop planted in that area to use the nitrogen put there by dry padding. Mr. Calderon indicated that
there was not. Mr. McClellon explained that dry padding, as it was described, is a discharge and
would not be allowed. Mr. McClellon asked if SKS Farms was going to compost the manure. Mr.
McClellon explained that the EHD is aware that SKS Farms has composting equipment. Mr.
Calderon said that they do not have any one who can operate the equipment. Mr. McClellon
suggested that Mr. Calderon consider composting the manure as a long-term solution to manure
management at the facility. Mr. McClellon suggested that Mr. Calderon call Loren Jessup, of
Sierra Organics, to see if they might be able to help. Mr. Calderon said they would like to be able
to give the manure away to neighbors. Mr. McClellon cautioned him that anyone who receives
the manure must be a specialized farming operation, must monitor the amount that is put out and
show that the intended crop would use the nitrogen that being applied. Mr. Calderon indicated
that he would gain EHD approval prior to taking it to a neighbor. Mr. Calderon was concerned,
because winter was coming and he did not have a place to take the dry manure. He said that the
wet and liquid manure would be stored in the ponds. Mr. Calderon said he has one company that
will take the manure in the spring. Mr. McClellon indicated that SKS Farms may need to store the
manure until springtime, and Mr. Calderon said that they have one large building that they could
use.
Robert McClellon, Supervising REHS
Environmental Health Department
