I appreciate your comments and cooperation, and assure you
that SFPUC is dedicating substantial efforts to develop solutions for this important
facility.
The Tesla Treatment Facility provides primary and secondary disinfection of Hetch
Hetchy Reservoir water before it enters the Bay Area and is delivered to water
customers. To serve potable water to 23 million Bay Area customers, SFPUC must
maintain compliance with Safe Drinking Water Act requirements for secondary
disinfection of the water by continuously operating the UV treatment process.
Discharges from the facility can occur as the result of UV treatment equipment. The
Tesla Treatment Facility UV treatment process equipment includes 12 reactors like the Mark Farrell
one shown by the attached Figure 1, in which can be seen the round, black endcap of a
]he Kwon
reactor with white lettering, reading, "Sentinel." In this figure, below the reactor can be ires<<I nt
seen grating, which is the cover of a trench drain. Figure 2 is a close-up photograph of Vince Courtney
the reactor with the endcap removed so that 9 round UV bulb receptacles are visible. vi`C.Pwident
Each receptacle allows insertion of a quartz sleeve, which houses a single UV lamp, Ann Moller Caen
Commissioner
preventing water contact with the bulb.
Francesco Viato;
Cmmmisioner
Figure 3 depicts the alignment of the trench drain, which extends the full distance of the Anson Moran
reactor building and conducts any water released by lamp failures by gravity out of the commissioner
Harlan L.Kelly,Jr.
General Ma»arger
Services of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission
OUR MISSION:To provide our customers with high-quality,efficient and reliable water, power and sewer
services in a manner that values environmental and community interests and sustains the resources entrusted
to our care. `''
