We currently use 10 of our poultry barns for Prop. 2 Cage free egg production. We are using
one barn currently for an egg packing room, one is being used for storage and the last two
houses will be demoed. The manure barn is also being used for a storage location at this time.
All poultry barns are cleaned by using a manure belt system. Barns 1,2,3 are cleaned out daily,
while barns 4, 6, 7, 10, 11 & 12 are cleaned 3-4 times per week.After the manure is removed
from the barns it is either conveyed on a belt or a scrapper system into a trailer. It is then either
directly removed from the farm or by a tractor pulling a dump trailer to be placed on a dry pad to
be turned 3-4 times before it is loaded into trailers to be hauled off site. The manure hauled off
site is taken to other farms for Agriculture land use. All the manure is being hauled of site by
Bruce Mellor trucking.
For every 100,000 birds approximately 12 ton of manure is produced per day. When the farm is
completed at 700,000 birds we will produce a total of 84 tons of manure per day. This would be
produced with approximately 20%to 80% moisture when it comes out of the barns .
Approximately 60 hens will die per day for every 100,000 birds housed. As of 7/16/18 all
mortality is removed from the barns daily and put into one of the four refrigeration units we have
on site. Once or twice a week, depending on the amount the mortality, we will have the mortality
picked up or deliver it to Darling Ingredients in Modest California. For stage one we would
increase the number of birds in each of the existing barns and build a completely enclosed
manure drying building to handle all of the manure from 400,000 birds. By making the manure
dry this would greatly reduce the odors from the farm.
All of the new poultry equipment that we have placed into the barns are the most advanced both
for the birds, the manure and the water handling. The barns are equipped with the latest in
ventilation systems, manure belts for easy removal from the barn and nipple drinkers for both
water savings and reducing moisture in the poultry manurer as well as the birds health. All of the
poultry feed is stored in tanks and is made up of mostly corn and soy. If any feed is spilled it is
picked up daily and placed in a garbage container. New Tech Pest Control is the company we
use to control any fly or rodent issues that might occur by having them install fly jars, fly bait, tin
cats and bait boxes. One to Two times a week or as needed the garbage is hauled off site in 40
yard containers by Gilton Waste Management.
All future new poultry houses will be built by following all state and county requirements. They
would incorporate the latest in poultry manure handling, air board and water board
requirements. We have always tried to be responsible neighbors with regard to odors, fly's and
general appearance of our operation.
Richard Jenkins
Partner/CEO
Pleasant Valley Farms
dba.
