Mr.Robert Gray Environmental
17 June 2014 Resources
Page 5 Management
Fourteen of the 0.5 and 4.5-foot samples were analyzed for metals. The
deeper samples were put on hold, to be analyzed if impacts to the
shallow soil from metals were discovered in the surface samples. Sixteen
of the samples collected were analyzed for ethylene glycol, and the
others were placed on hold. Other than the samples located near the
ethylene glycol storage tanks (SB-13 and SB-19),the sampling locations
and intervals that were chosen for analysis were selected at random, with
a bias towards the shallower 0.5-foot and 4.5-foot sample intervals.
As shown in Table 1, there were no detections of VOCs in any of the
samples and some detections of TPH-diesel and-motor oil in the shallow
0.5-foot samples at the southern compressor station. Detections of TPH-
diesel ranged from 19 milligrams per kilogram(mg/kg) to 48 mg/kg,
and detections of TPH-motor oil ranged from 160 to 850 mg/kg. All
metals were detected in the shallow soil samples, but only arsenic at
concentrations above Tier 1 Environmental Screening Levels (ESLs). The
Tier 1 ESLs,where applicable, are provided in Table 1 for comparative
purposes. Arsenic was detected in every sample;concentrations ranged
from 1.21 to 8.09 mg/kg. These values fall within the range of
background concentrations of arsenic in Northern California (Diamond
et al,2009). Ethylene glycol was not detected in any of the samples,
including the samples located near the storage tanks at the northern and
southern compressor stations.
QUALITYASSURANCF,/QUALITY CONTROL
All provisions in the Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) Plan
were followed during the field work.Specific QA/QC findings include:
• Equipment rinsate samples were collected on both sampling days and
analyzed for CAM 17 metals,TPH,ethylene glycol, and VOCs.
Rinsate samples were collected by running distilled water over the
bucket of the hand auger and capturing the runoff into the sample
containers. Zinc was detected in equipment rinsate sample EB-2;
however,no data were qualified because the detected sample
concentrations were greater than 10 times the blank contamination.
• Trip blanks were placed in the ice chest shipment of samples and
were analyzed for VOCs. No analytes were detected in the trip
blanks.
