V. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
NLS§ 4.1. The nitrate loading calculations show the effluent from the proposed Delta Charter
Schools facility will theoretically possess a nitrate-nitrogen concentration of 4.3 mg/L NO3-N,
57% below the Federal nitrate Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 10 ppm NO3-N.
Septic tank effluent from the septic tank serving the New Jerusalem School was sampled and
analyzed. The nitrogen concentrations were found to be higher than what would be expected
which may be attributed to low flow toilet and faucet fixtures.
A backhoe test pit excavated adjacent to the existing leachfields reveals significant denitrification
evidence, with the nitrate-nitrogen concentrations decreasing from the 6 ft depth to the 10 ft depth
by 80% (10 ppm to 2 ppm).
Although the distribution box will be placed on top of a 6" thick, level concrete base, Tuf-Tite®
Speed Levelers will be installed on each of the 12 outlets. This will ensure that each leachline is
receiving an equal volume of effluent from the total volume.
If not mandated, consideration should be given to installing water meters on the main water inlets
into the three restrooms. Volume usage may then be quantified by the day, week, month and
school year.
Consideration should be given to using biodegradable toilet paper since it is anticipated that paper
use may be significant. There are many brands on the market; Scotts®Rapid-Dissolving Toilet
Paper is an example.
The nature of the school calendar will be beneficial to the effluent receiving soils. During the
summer months of June, July and part of August when the school is closed, this will allow the
soils to "rest and rehabilitate" which is referenced in the scientific literature.
Since the leachfield will be in the ball field grass area, nothing will be stored on and no vehicles,
other than a lawnmower, will be driven over this area.
I
Page A 0-
Chesney Consulting
