16
1 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this report is to document soil sampling results for petroleum hydrocarbons in soil
associated with a leak of hydraulic oil at Well 18-west located at PG&E's McDonald Island Gas Storage
Facility between the period of April 14, 1997 to August 18, 1998.
The affected area was impacted by approximately 100 gallons of hydraulic fluid. The hydraulic fluid
was released as a result of a leaking fuse plug on a hydraulic line which services the fire suppression
system at the wellhead. The source was isolated and hydraulic fluid observed on the surrounding soil
surface was contained with absorbent material. Following isolation of the leak and surface cleanup,
approximately fifteen yards of impacted soil was removed and placed on visqueen. The excavated soil
was placed in bins, and manifested accordingly from the analytical results of the surface samples.
Following the initial cleanup, additional samples were taken over a period of several months to meet the
cleanup levels. The affected area was approximately 7 feet in circumference by 17 feet deep. This
report presents a description of the field methods used for sampling the soil and water along with results
of the tests.
2 SAMPLE EVENTS
Analytical results and sample locations are presented in Tables 1-5 and Figures 1-3 in chronological
_ order.
April 14, 1997
Soil was sampled following a leak of hydraulic oil at Well 18-west and analyzed for Total Extractable
Petroleum Hydrocarbons(TEPH)for Diesel and Motor Oil by EPA Method 8015 modified.
April 22, 1997
Soil was sampled at 6 to 18 inches below the ground surface and analyzed for TEPH as Diesel,Motor
Oil,and Hydraulic Oil.
April 25, 1997
Soil was sampled at 12 to 42 inches below the ground surface and analyzed for hydraulic oil by EPA
Method 8015M.
•
562 1-98 100.doc 1
