Conner 4 10/9/2007 <br /> Pacific Gas&Electric Company <br /> 1.4 Land and Surface Water Use <br /> Land use surrounding the site is primarily irrigated agriculture for three primary production <br /> crops: asparagus, potatoes and sod (PG&E, 2007). Irrigation water and site hydrologic <br /> conditions are controlled through a network of intake and discharge pumps. Intake pumps <br /> siphon water from the San Joaquin and Middle Rivers and their cuts in response to local <br /> agricultural needs. There is no known intake or discharge pumping schedule or trends in <br /> water usage; intake pumping and irrigation, and water discharge, are conducted on an as- <br /> needed basis. Local agriculture managers at McDonald Island continuously monitor <br /> groundwater conditions to determine when water needs to be pumped from McDonald <br /> Island back into the rivers. Discharge pumping generally occurs during periods of high <br /> groundwater or flooding. <br /> 2.0 FIELD SUPPORT ACTIVITIES <br /> Field support activities will be conducted prior to, during, and upon completion of <br /> fieldwork. Field support activities include the following: <br /> • Obtaining drilling permits <br /> • Staking boring locations <br /> • Underground utility clearance <br /> • Decontamination <br /> • Field documentation <br /> • Sample labeling, packaging and chain of custody <br /> • Surveying <br /> The following sections describe these field activities. <br /> 2.1 Obtaining Drilling Permits <br /> All drilling will be completed in compliance with the requirements for permits issued by <br /> San Joaquin County and the State of California. <br /> 2.2 Staking Boring Locations <br /> The field geologist (or designee)will complete drilling location staking. Staking will consist <br /> of placing a stake or hair nail in the ground and marking the proposed boring location. <br /> The ground marking will identify the boring by its number and type (shallow soil, <br /> intermediate/deep soil, groundwater or temporary piezometer). Marking will be done <br /> using either a permanent, waterproof marker or paint. <br /> 2.3 Underground Utility Clearance <br /> Underground Service Alert will be contacted to mark known utilities at the proposed <br /> locations. If any utilities are identified at any drilling location, the field geologist (or <br /> designee)will identify a new location that is at least five feet away from any marked <br /> utilities. However, considering the historical use of Pond 3 and the closure activities <br /> implemented under the pond, it is highly unlikely that utilities exist in the proposed boring <br /> locations. <br /> 2.4 Decontamination <br />
