Ms. Anne P. Conner 8 10/9/2007
Pacific Gas&Electric Company
• Inorganic Anions (Br, Cl, F, NO3/NO2, SO4)— EPA method 300.1
• Nitrogen as Ammonia — EPA method 350.1
• Total Phosphate— EPA method 365.2
• Total and Dissolved Metals— EPA method 6010/6020
• Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)— EPA method 160.1
Total and dissolved metals will include Al, B, Ba, Ca, K, Mg, Mn, and Na. If possible,
ferrous iron and sulfide will also be analyzed through the use of Hach TM field test kits, and
an attempt will also be made to analyze field parameters (pH, DO, ORP, temperature and
turbidity). Depending on the volume of groundwater able to be collected at each location
and depth, it might be necessary to establish a priority on laboratory analysis, with first
priority on constituents of concern (CDCs) in the MRP.
Collected samples will be placed in coolers with ice until shipment.
Upon completion of sampling at each location, boreholes will be grouted with a cement
plus 5% bentonite powder slurry to surface.
3.4 Intermediate/Deep Zone Soil Sampling
After completion of intermediate/deep zone groundwater sampling, intermediate/deep
zone soil sampling will be completed adjacent to the intermediate/deep zone groundwater
sample locations (Figure 3-1)2. Direct push or another effective drilling technology will be
used to collect soil samples from depths of 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 feet bgs at each
sample location. Soil samples will be collected from each depth and location in
accordance with SOP EI-GS001, Standards for Conducting Subsurface Soil Sampling
While Drilling (Shaw, 2007a), or equivalent. Specifically, thin-walled (acetate) tubing will
be advanced through undisturbed soil to the specified sample depth. The tubing will
subsequently be removed and the specified sample interval will be capped with Teflon TM
film and plastic caps. A permanent ink marker will be used to mark the top and bottom
sample interval on each sample tube. A total of 21 samples will be collected and
analyzed for the following:
• Chloride and Sulfate— EPA method 300.1
• pH — EPA method 150.1
• Total Metals — EPA method 6010/6020
Total metals will include CAM17 metals (Ag, As, Ba, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb,
Sb, Se, Ti, V, Zn) plus Al, Ca, Mn and Na.
Collected samples will be placed in coolers with ice until shipment. Upon completion of
sampling at each location, boreholes will be grouted to the surface with a slurry consisting
of cement plus 5% bentonite powder.
4.0 SAMPLE ANALYSIS PLAN, DATA REVIEW AND PROCESS REPORTING
'Collecting intermediate/deep groundwater samples before intermediate/deep soil samples will avoid
potential alkalinity effects on groundwater from soil borehole grouting.
