ACTION GUIDE#2— FERRIC CHLORIDE EXPOSURE WITHOUT FIRE
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Ferric Chloride Cas#7705-08-0 7,500 gallons
Ferric chloride is an orange to brown-black solid. Ferric chloride is slightly soluble in water.
Ferric chloride is noncombustible. Ferric chloride is used to treat sewage, industrial waste, to
purify water, as an etching agent for engraving circuit boards, and in the manufacture of other
chemicals.
CAUTION:
• Very sensitive to moisture. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents; forms explosive
mixtures with sodium, potassium.
• When wet Ferric chloride is corrosive to aluminum and most metals. Pick up and remove
spilled solid before adding water.
• Irritating hydrogen chloride fumes may form in fire (Special Hazards of Combustion
Products).
• Very hygroscopic. Slightly water soluble, where a 0.1M solution has a pH of 2.0.
INDICATIONS:
• Sudden or gradual loss of line pressure,
• Loud noise from venting and flashing materials,
• Formation of vapor/mist/dust cloud.
PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE FOR PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTAL IGNITION ARE THE FOLLOWING:
1. Evacuate any members of the public from the immediate area. This should not usually
be a problem in the facility.
2. Use UL approved equipment (such as flashlights, cutting equipment, and pumping
equipment).
3. Work upwind of the spilled chemical as much as possible.
4. Use diesel powered equipment and machinery.
5. Use rubber tied equipment in elevated areas when working in the immediate vicinity of
the spilled chemical.
6. Work as far ahead of the chemical as possible.
7. Use non-sparking tools in areas where vapors are present.
8. No smoking.
9. Alert affected area personnel.
IF QUALIFIED,THE FIRST RESPONDER SHOULD FOLLOW THIS SEQUENCE:
1. Assess situation, move upwind and note all details of release: Location, discovery time,
source, quantity, ability to safely shut-off source.
2. Stop any sources of ignition within the area if safe to do so.
