ACTION GUIDE#3— FERRIC CHLORIDE EXPOSURE WITH FIRE
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Ferric Chloride Cas#7705-08-0 7,500 gallons
Ferric chloride is an orange to brown-black solid. Ferric chloride is slightly soluble in water.
Ferric chloride is noncombustible. Ferric chloride is used to treat sewage, industrial waste, to
purify water, as an etching agent for engraving circuit boards, and in the manufacture of other
chemicals.
CAUTION:
• Very sensitive to moisture. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents; forms explosive
mixtures with sodium, potassium.
• When wet Ferric chloride is corrosive to aluminum and most metals. Pick up and remove
spilled solid before adding water.
• Very hygroscopic. Slightly water soluble, where a 0.1M solution has a pH of 2.0.
• Toxic by-products of fire (cinders, smoke, and gasses) are to be avoided.
• Stay upwind of fire in a safe area.
DO NOTATTEMPTTO EXTINGUISH A FIRE IF THE FUEL SOURCE CANNOT BE SHUT OFF FIRST—FLARE
UP COULD OCCUR
WARNING
IRRITATING HYDROGEN CHLORIDE FUMES MAY FORM IN FIRE
IF QUALIFIED THE FIRST RESPONDER SHOULD FOLLOW THIS SEQUENCE (Note that Fires
beyond the beginning stages are not candidates for simple firefighting techniques and
portable fire extinguishers. You are responsible for doing the following)
Bins/Containers:
1. Pull Fire Alarm
2. Contact 9-1-1 or the fire department.
3. Do not approach smoldering bin/containers, nor attempt to put out a bin/container on
fire.
4. Secure the area from public access.
5. Notify Emergency Coordinator or other personnel on site.
6. Stand by to lend assistance.
Guidelines for Portable Fire Extinguisher Use:
1. Pull Fire Alarm
2. Call 9-1-1.
3. Shut off the fuel source.
4. Make sure the public is safe. Isolate and deny access to the area.
