ACTION GUIDE#7—GRASS FIRE
GENERAL INFORMATION:
All fires must be reported to 9-1-1 immediately, even if extinguished by an employee. Further
damage or future flare-up must be assessed by the Fire Department. Only those employees
properly trained and equipped are to attack beginning stage fires.
CAUTION:
• Toxic bi-products of fire (cinders, smoke, and gasses) are to be avoided.
• Stay upwind of fire in a safe area. It is possible that a simple grass fire could have a
hydrocarbon fuel source, or that hydrocarbons may become involved as the fire grows.
DO NOT ATTEMPTTO EXTINGUISH A FIRE IF THE FUEL SOURCE CANNOT BE SHUT OFF FIRST—FLARE
UP COULD OCCUR
IF QUALIFIED THE FIRST RESPONDER SHOULD FOLLOW THIS SEQUENCE (Note that Fires
beyond the beginning stages are not candidates for simple firefighting techniques and
portable fire extinguishers. You are responsible for doing the following)
1. Assess situation. Call 9-1-1.
2. Isolate and deny entry into the area.
3. Notify Emergency Coordinator or other personnel on site.
4. Redirect traffic to allow access for the Fire Department.
5. Do not open or close valves or actuate other devices until you are thoroughly familiar
with the consequences of those actions.
6. Hold traffic until all clear from the Fire Department.
7. Use fire extinguisher, dirt, and water to extinguish fire if in beginning stages.
8. Follow evacuation directions from Fire Department or law enforcement.
GUIDELINES FOR PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER USE:
1. Call 9-1-1.
2. Make sure the public is safe. Isolate and deny access to the area.
3. Shut off the fuel source.
4. Use a Class ABC extinguisher, only after doing Steps 1, 2, and 3.
5. Approach from an upwind direction.
6. Aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire and sweep from side-to-side.
7. Back away from the smoldering or burning material.
8. Apply water to extinguish the smoldering embers.
9. If fire is not extinguished after exhausting one 30 Ib. fire extinguisher, back away.
10. Notify:
Fire Department: 9-1-1
Emergency Coordinator Milt Daley
(209) 941-7430 (Office)
(209) 992-0044(Cellular)
