ACTION GUIDE#8— MEDICAL EMERGENCY <br /> GENERAL INFORMATION: <br /> Medical emergency is a term that describes the critical condition of an employee's health. All <br /> efforts will be expended to relieve the condition as quickly and safely as possible. No <br /> employee shall perform medical aid outside of their specific training. <br /> CAUTION: <br /> • Medical emergencies require extreme caution; ill-advised procedures may do more <br /> harm than good. <br /> • Proper personal protective equipment in the first-aid kits shall be used to protect against <br /> blood borne pathogens. <br /> IF QUALIFIED,THE FIRST RESPONDER SHOULD FOLLOW THIS SEQUENCE <br /> 1. Call 9-1-1. <br /> 2. Notify Emergency Coordinator or on-duty supervisor. <br /> 3. Provide first aid to victim. Follow pre-trained procedures only. <br /> 4. Do not attempt to treat seriously injured or ill employee except when the following is <br /> necessary: <br /> a. To give CPR. <br /> b. To stop bleeding. <br /> c. To treat for shock. <br /> d. To assess injury/illness <br /> 5. DO NOT move injured unless he/she is in a life threatening area. <br /> 6. If transported by private or company car, notify local hospital that patient is on way. <br /> 7. If there is a chemical exposure, notify the hospital and bring the MSDS for the chemical, <br /> which caused the exposure to the hospital emergency room. <br /> 8. Remove contact lenses if worn. Seek immediate medical <br /> attention. <br /> SKIN — Skin contact with the liquid may result in frostbite and burns. Treat frostbitten or <br /> burned skin by flushing or immersing the affected area in lukewarm water. After sensation has <br /> returned to the frostbitten skin, keep skin warm, dry, and clean. If blistering occurs, apply a <br /> sterile dressing. See immediate medical attention. <br />
