Pacific EcoRisk Environmental Consulting &Testing
1.INTRODUCTION
GeoAnalytical Laboratories,Inc. (GeoAnalytical)has contracted Pacific EcoRisk(PER)to
conduct a screening-level Title 22"Hazardous Waste"fish toxicity evaluation of a waste sample
designated"#3 F.A.Ground"that was delivered to the PER testing laboratory on May 17,2016.
This evaluation consisted of performing a 96-hour toxicity test with juvenile fathead minnows
(Pimephales promelas). This report describes the performance and results of this test.
2.ACUTE TOXICITY TEST PROCEDURES
This testing followed the guidelines established by the California Dept.of Fish&Game manual
"Static Acute Bioassay Procedures for Hazardous Waste Samples" (Polisini and Miller 1988),
with additional guidelines as provided by the California Dept.of Health Services (Janna White,
personal communication).
2.1 Receipt and Handling of the Waste Sample
A waste sample designated"#3 F.A. Ground"was delivered to the PER testing laboratory on
May 17 where it was placed under refrigeration at 4°C until being used to prepare test solutions.
The chain-of-custody record for the collection and delivery of the waste sample is provided in
Appendix A.
2.2 Preparation of the Test Media
The Lab Water Control medium for this test consisted of synthetic US EPA"soft" water
(prepared by adding reagent grade salts to Type 1 lab water [reverse-osmosis de-ionized water]).
The waste sample was homogenized, after which sub-samples of waste were mixed with the Lab
Water Control medium for six hrs, using a rotary mixer. After mixing, these preliminary
solutions were used to prepare test solutions at sample concentrations of 250,500,and 750 mg/L.
The initial pH of the 250,500,and 750 mg/L test solutions was>9.0. As per California Dept.of
Fish&Game test guidelines (1988),and by request of the client, test solutions were pH adjusted
to 8.5 by drop-wise addition of HCl.
2.3 Acute Toxicity Testing with Fathead Minnows
The fathead minnows used in this test were obtained from a commercial supplier(Thomas Fish
Company,Anderson,CA).These fish were maintained in aerated aquaria containing EPA
synthetic soft water at 20°C prior to their use in this test.
The hazardous waste test was run at sample concentrations of 250,500,and 750 mg/L,with a
Lab Water Control treatment consisting of the same synthetic EPA"soft"water. As the sample
Page 1 L)
4 15 ((
