Houses 1 and 6 are "cage free" aviary houses.
Each house consists of four banks, each with two decks that have manure
conveyors below them. The conveyor belts take the manure out of the house
three times a week. (The manure on the floor in the aisles is cleaned out with the
litter between flocks.)
This "fresh" manure is taken to the cement pad and mixed with "dry matter" (bark,
sawdust, wood fines, etc.). It is then hauled off within two weeks by the manure
contractor who composts it off site.
III. House 11 is a "scrape-out" house.
House 11 is the remaining scrape-out house, where three tiers of cages are off-
set allowing the manure to fall directly to the concrete floor. Cable scrapers
transport the manure to the rear of the house daily where it falls into a concrete
channel. The manure is taken out of the house by a cross conveyor and then
taken to the "fresh" manure pad and mixed with dry matter.
Solid Waste (Refuse and Dead Animal) Management
There are two 3-yard dumpsters that are emptied weekly by Stockton Scavengers
Assoc., Inc. This service handles the everyday employee generated garbage and the
household garbage of the resident caretaker.
The daily mortality of 250-300 chickens is incinerated in the two incinerators. One is
located in the front unit and the other in the back unit. Ash from the incinerators is
disposed of in the trash dumpsters. Feathers routinely fall into the manure and are
handled with the manure.
Feeding Operations
Chicken feed (grain) is stored in closed feed bins (silos) at the front and rear of the hen
houses. It is then augured into the automatic feeding system. Any feed spillage
resulting from a mechanical breakdown will be promptly cleaned up. Since the feed is
automatically augured directly into the chicken hoppers, there is minimal spillage which
is swept up weekly. The feed storage silos are sealed against the weather and do not
need cleaning as the chickens routinely go through a full silo every three days.
