During the process of making wine,grapes are crushed <br /> to remove the juice which is fermented into wine. The viticultural byproducts from the winemaking <br /> process,called pomace,are the remains of the crushed grapes: skins, seeds, stems,pulp and solids fining <br /> materials. The bulk of the pomace is generated during the grape crush season,approximately August 1 to <br /> November 1. These byproducts are the raw material ingredients for the compost. The pomace is piled in <br /> windrows in an area specifically designated for composting.During the active composting process,the <br /> windrows are periodically mixed from top to bottom,depending on temperature,until the process is <br /> complete. Then the finished compost is transported for broadcast on farmland. <br /> Volume of Materials Handled <br /> Site Capacity: 15,000 Cubic Yards <br /> Peak Loading: 36 Cubic Yards/Dav <br /> Annual Loading: 4,000 Cubic Yards <br /> Days and Hours of Operation <br /> Pomace Generation: August 1 to November 1,up to 7 days per week,up to 15 hours per day. <br /> November 1 to August 1,intermittent low volume generation during 24 hour operation. <br /> Compost Handling: Intermittent activity during daylight hours throughout the year. <br />
