VONSHealth
Ms. Florido
September 28, 2018
Page 6
review of the CVS hazardous waste management program, and Mr. Yerzy discussed with store
personnel the importance of following the instructions provided by the RF Unit, processing
damages daily, placing items in a properly labeled container and maintaining general
housekeeping. Please note, this training is not recorded in the consolidated records since we
consider it to be supplemental of the annually required hazardous waste training.
Emergency Coordinator
Your item#127 relates to failing to have an emergency coordinator available to respond
to an emergency. This concern was previously addressed above, in the Contingency Plan
discussion.
Housekeeping/Spill Response& Containment
Your item#301 relates to minimizing the release of a hazardous waste. The CVS Health
retail hazardous waste program prohibits any free liquids, whether contained in a self-sealing bag
or not. Also, any item that is leaking or likely to leak must be double-bagged with absorbent to
ensure that no free liquids are placed into the hazardous waste containers. The program includes
requirements specific to processing unsaleables/damages daily and maintaining general
housekeeping. These requirements are covered in the annual hazardous waste training and
described in detail in job aides provided to store colleagues. To address your concern,
appropriately trained store personnel cleaned up the leaking retail items observed during your
inspection and have disposed of all the waste and clean up materials in the properly labeled
hazardous waste container. Attached, please find photo evidence, which shows the hazardous
waste area free of spilled or leaking items. Also, on August 31, 2018 Chris Yerzy, the CVS
Health Environmental Specialist for northern California, retrained store colleagues on the
hazardous waste program, including the importance of proper spill cleanup and double-bagging
leaking items with absorbent to ensure no free liquids are placed in hazardous waste totes. Chris
returned to the store September 14`h, 2018 to reinforce these requirements.
Aisle Space
Your item#304 relates to maintaining aisle space in the hazardous waste storage area.
We have received confirmation that the aisle in the hazardous waste storage area has been
cleared. In addition, appropriate personnel have been retrained on maintaining adequate aisle
space to allow unobstructed movement. Attached please find photo documentation, which shows
the cleared aisle space.
Container Closure
Your item#403 relates to keeping hazardous waste containers closed. The CVS
Hazardous Waste Program has been specifically designed to ensure the proper container
management, while meeting the unique challenges of collecting and storing hazardous wastes for
proper disposal in a space-constrained retail setting.
