Box 1810
Stockton, CA 95201
REVIEW OFFOURTH QUARTER AND ANNUAL 2000 MONITORING REPORT, CORRAL
HOLL 0 W SANITAR Y LANDFILL, SAN JOA Q UIN CO UNTY(CASE NO. 1896)
Regional Board staff has reviewed the Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill, Fourth Quarter and Annual
2000, Groundwater and Surface Water Monitoring Report, dated 15 January 2001.
Monitoring well MW-5 has tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and vinyl chloride detected at concentrations
greater than drinking water Maximum Contaminant Levels and other water quality goals. The county
has submitted documentation that the VOCs detected in MW-5 may be associated with high
.concentrations of landfill gas present in this area of the landfill. The county is installing a landfill gas
collection system and will begin operation this spring. Increasing trends are also noted at MW-5 for
total dissolved solids, chloride, and specific conductance. These trends may be indicative of leachate
impact to groundwater, and will continue to be evaluated after the operation of the landfill gas system is
initiated. Our letter of 2 March 2001 requests that the county submit an amended Report of Waste
Discharge so that staff can revise the WDRs to include information on the LFG system.
It is also noted that groundwater at MW-4 exhibits increasing trends for nitrate and EC, though they are
not above the tolerance limits yet.
SB-1 had a detection of acetone. Also, the field records indicate that groundwater purged from SB-1 is
light red. Field personnel also noted that the"string turned red down casing". This significance of the
red color should be discussed and explained. Please address this further in the next quarterly report.
I have attached a copy of the Monitoring Report Compliance Checklist that will be included in the case
file for Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill.
If you have any questions or comments regarding my review, please call me at (916) 255-3137.
/V,a4a4"6-a
WENDY W.
