Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
kq K L E I N F E L D E R
Four PAHs from the semi -volatile organic analyses (EPA 8270) were detected in a single
composite sample. A summary of the concentrations are shown on Table 2 found in the
appendix of this report. A summary of the four PAHs concentrations are illustrated below with
including Industrial PRGs
PAHs Analytes
Concentration (mg/kg)
Industrial PRG (mg/kg)
Benzo (a) anthracene
0.15
2.9
Benzo (a) pyrene
0.15
0.29*
Chrysene
0.11
290
Fluoranthene
0.17
30,000
* "Cal -Modified PRG" (PEA 1994)
As noted above the concentrations for each of these compounds area below PRGs for industrial
use. According to the "Handbook of Environmental Data on Organic Chemicals, Second
Edition", these chemical have similar sources including crude oil, coal tar, emissions from
gasoline engines, asphalt, cigarette smoke, sewage etc. In general these are relatively heavy and
found in a variety of compounds. These type of PAHs generally have low solubility.
Corrosivity
The composite stockpile samples was also analyzed for corrosivity. Corrosivity is measured
using pH. The pH values ranged from 7.89 to 7.96 units which is slightly alkaline. However in
Kleinfelder's experience these values are not uncommon of many soils in the valley.
5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
Based upon the analytical results presented in this report, it appears the stockpiled material is
suitable for industrial use or to be disposed of in an appropriate landfill. If the material is to be
moved offsite, the findings within this report should be made available to the recipient of the
material and approval obtained from PHS/EHD. Offsite residential use of this material is not
recommended. Kleinfelder recommends forwarding this report to PHS/EHD for their review and
comment.
This report, and the conclusions and recommendations presented in this report are subject to the
"Limitations" presented below. Any other party other than regulatory agencies having
enforcement jurisdiction for this site) who would like to use this report shall notify Kleinfelder,
Inc. of such intended use by executing the "Application for Authorization to Use" contained in
Attachment C.
20-1108-33-001/2011 R 1 188 Page 5 of 7
0 2001, Kleinfelder, Inc.
