GENERAL SITE SAFETY AND HEALTWPLAN . . -
HAZARD ASSESSMENT CHART
Hazard Action Hazard Elimination or Risk Reduction Procedure and Proper Protective Equipment
Level
ventilation will be used to reduce flammable vapor concentrations to below 10 % of the lower explosive limit.
• If air monitoring indicates hydrocarbon vapor concentrations are present in the work area at concentrations
greater than 10 % of the lower explosive limit, measures will be taken immediately to reduce ambient
hydrocarbon vapor concentrations .
Heat > 75 F Monitoring for heat stress will be performed when ambient air temperatures are above 75° Fahrenheit ( F) and
anytime when employees are wearing chemically resistant clothing . Effects of heat-related stress/illnesses are
progressive and are characterized as follows :
■ Heat Rash — Caused by exposure to heat, humid air, and irritation by wet, scratching clothing . Heat rash
interferes with the kidneys' ability to tolerate heat.
■ Heat Cramps — Caused by excessive perspiration in which fluids and electrolytes are not adequately replaced .
Symptoms are muscle cramps and stomach pain , which occur after work has stopped .
■ Heat Exhaustion — Caused by stress on various organs due to the body trying to cool itself. Symptoms include
pale , moist skin , profuse sweating , weakness , and dizziness . Cool victim and seek medical assistance
immediately.
■ Heat Stroke — The most serious consequence of heat stress . It is caused by total failure of the body' s cooling
system . Symptoms are red , dry , hot skin ; lack of perspiration , nausea ; rapid pulse , and unconsciousness . The
body must be cooled immediately to prevent death . Seek medical attention immediately .
C) Plenty of fluids and water will be provided for drinking and cooling . Employees will be encouraged to drink during
all breaks . When temperatures are above 85° F , breaks will be taken more often .
CHEMICAL
Gasoline Any amount Gasoline is a flammable organic compound .
of free Nitrile gloves will be used when handling gasoline
gasoline :ZIf clasoline vapors are present respiratory rotection may be required see below
Gasoline 50 ppm Approved respiratory protection will be required when concentration levels exceed the action level .
Vapors Only approved respirators with organic vapor cartridges will be used .
Respirators will be used in accordance will be the WPI Respiratory Protection Program
Carbon 5000 ppm Carbon Monoxide is a colorless , odorless gas than can cause poisoning and death in high concentrations . Carbon
monoxide monoxide is generated while truck and diesel generators are operating .
Do not allow carbon monoxide gas to accumulate in confined spaces .
Truck and diesel exhaust will be directed away from places frequented by people,
Diesel Fuel Any free Diesel fuel is a combustible organic liquid ,
