PATHOGEN REDUCTION
Fecal Coliform Analysis
Pathogen reduction is accomplished during the composting process. As
required in Section 17868.1(a)(1) California Waste takes a composite sample
from its compost product for every 5,000 cubic yards of compost produced.
Each composite sample is analyzed for its metals concentration and its
pathogen concentration (Fecal coliform).
Based on our current throughput at the composting facility, we estimate a yearly
compost production of approximately 20,000 cubic yards. To facilitate
scheduling of sampling and laboratory analysis, in August 1994, a quarterly
sampling regime was approved by your office as follows:
Metals and Pathoge Sampling Schedule
1 st Quarter 2nd Quarter 3rd Quarter 4th Quarter
January 15 April 15 July 15 October 15
We propose to continue this sampling schedule in the future. Results of the
tests are generally available by the first of the following month.
Temperature Measurements
Temperature measurements will be made for every 200 yd 3 of active compost.
Based on a current active compost volume of 8,400 yd 3, 42 temperature points
will be measured. However, the number of temperature recording points will
vary depending upon the throughput and length of time the material spends in
the trapezoid windrow. A sample weekly temperature and moisture content
recording sheet has been attached.
Temperature measurement will be recorded Monday through Saturday and
placed in a permanent file available for your inspection.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me at 369-8274 or Blake
Tresan with Integrated Recycling, Inc. at (916) 325-2577.
Sincerely
Thom Sanchez
Vice-President, Operations
