kn KLEINFELDER <br /> sealed with aluminum foil and tight-fitting plastic caps and the sealed tube was immediately <br /> stored in an iced cooler for possible chemical analysis. In addition to the samples collected <br /> in brass tubes, one samplewas collected ' 8-ounce sterile glass jar provided by the <br /> , <br /> analytical laboratory. This grab" sample was collected based on visual observations in B-1. <br /> Samples selected for chemical analysis were delivered under-chain-of-custody control to <br /> Chemwest Analytical Laboratory. The chain-of-custody is included in Appendix A. <br /> The banks of the Mokelumne River were visually inspected for seepage that could be <br /> leachate from the landfill. No seepage was noted, therefore, no leachate samples were. <br /> collected from the river bank area. <br /> Qualitative Field Screening <br /> A Photovac photoionization detector (PID) was used to provide a qualitative screening of <br /> each soil sample collected during the borings. The PID measures ionizable compounds in <br /> the air in parts per million by volume. Calibration was performed prior to use in the field <br /> using a standard 25 ppm benzene gas. Ambient air at the site was used to set the <br /> instrument zero. The screening procedure consisted of sealing a soil sample in a clean <br /> Mason jar, allowing the sample to equilibrate for approximately two minutes, and scanning <br /> the headspace of the jar for volatiles. Each vapor reading was noted as the field screening <br /> result on the boring logs. <br /> The field screening did not indicate the presence of ionizable organic compounds in the <br /> samples collected. <br /> Soil Sample Selection for Laboratory Analysis <br /> Because field screening did not indicate the presence of ionizable organic compounds in <br /> the samples, sample selection was based on field observations. Samples of the waste were <br /> selected from intervals with the highest observed concentration of waste. <br /> Three samples from MW-1 (one sample of the waste, one sample from the waste/soil <br /> interface, and one sample from the vadose zone below the waste) were submitted for <br /> chemical analysis. One sample was selected from B-2, one from B-3, and two samples were <br /> selected from B-4 for chemical analysis. These samples are described as follows: <br /> 137-88-1663 7 <br />
