KLEINFELDER
3 FIELD ACTIVITIES
3.1 DRILLING AND SOIL SAMPLING
Four soil borings were drilled in order to collect samples for chemical analysis on
September 21, 1988. One of the soil borings (MW-1) was drilled approximately 150 feet
south of the Mokelumne River, an area likely to have the highest concentration of waste
based on previous investigations. The boring locations are shown on Plate 2. Samples of
the waste, soil/waste interface, and vadose zone under the landfill were collected from the
borings for chemical characterization.
DdUing
The soil borings were advanced using a truck-mounted drill. rig, equipped with 8-inch
(MW-1) and 6-inch (B-2, B-3, and B-4) hollow-stem augers. During drilling, an
experienced environmental geologist classified the soils using the Unified Soil
Classification System(USCS), collected soil samples for laboratory analysis, and logged the
borehole. The USCS is shown on Plate 3. The boring logs are shown on Plates 4 through
7. Borings, were advanced to approximately 2 feet below the waste/soil interface.
To reduce the potential for cross-contamination, augers and associated equipment were
steam cleaned prior to drilling each boring. In addition, sampling equipment was cleaned
with a detergent wash and rinsed with distilled water prior to the collection of each soil
sample.
Soil cuttings produced during drilling were containerized in 55-gallon drums.
Sampling
Samples were collected from the borings, approximately every 3 feet for field screening,
lithologic logging, and potential chemical analysis. Samples were collected by advancing
the boring to a point immediately above the desired sampling depth and then driving a
Modified Porter Sampler, lined with three brass tubes, into the undisturbed soil. The
sampler was then removed from the bottom of the boring. The bottom (third) tube was
137-88-1663 6
