KLEINFELDER
TS
The following sections describe the results of the investigation, including the visual
observations and the analytical results of sampling.
4.1 WASTE, LEACHATE,AND VADOSE ZONE
The character of the waste, leachate, and vadose zone was assessed by drilling four soil
borings through the landfill to collect soil samples for visual inspection and chemical
analysis.
4.1.1 LOCATION AND VOLUME OF WASTE
Based on the boring logs (Plates 4 through 7) it appears that the thickness of fill material
varies between 10 and 20 feet on the site. However, the fill material is primarily composed
of sand, silty sand, and sandy silt that has been incorporated over the years as the site has
been leveled and graded. Only thin lenses of fill containing more than 10 percent refuse
were encountered in this investigation. This supports Kleinfelder's 1983 investigation,
where three of the four backhoe pits encountered less than 10 percent refuse in the fill.
Cross Section A-A', Plate 8, displays the interpreted fill boundary and areas of refuse
encountered in the four borings.
The refuse encountered was primarily composed of glass, ceramic, metallic slag, and
charred material. This agrees with observations recorded in Kleinfelder's 1983
investigation. The backhoe pits excavated in 1983 also encountered chunks of concrete and
asphalt. Kleinfelder's observations support historical information that the landfill received
primarily construction debris, leaves, and tree stumps and indicates that this refuse was
likely incinerated on many occasions.
Based on data from previous investigations and a review of aerial photographs taken in
1963, the areal extent of the landfill appears to be between 15,000 and 18,000 square yards.
The depth of the fill appears to vary between 10 and 20 feet. Therefore, between 50,000
and 120,000 cubic yards of fill material is contained on site.
137-88-1663 12
