Page 12 FE 382- 063- 00
excavation should extend at least 8 feet beyond the exterior
foundations . The material directly beneath the exterior
foundations should be removed and replaced to a depth of at least
12 feet. Width of the trench should extend 1 foot laterally
beyond the footing outline for each foot of excavation depth
below the design bottom of the footing . In other words , for a
footing width of 18 inches , a trench width of 10-1/2 feet would
be necessary at 9 feet below the bottom of this footing . Upon
completion of excavation of the trench , the soils engineer should
examine consistency and quality of existing material below the
bottom of the trench in order to determine the need for
additional excavations prior to placing the fill . Upon
completion of the excavation, the trench may be backfilled with a
3/4- inch maximum aggregate to 3 feet below the lowest adjacent
grade . The aggregate should be end-dumped into the excavation
which should achieve adequate compaction to support footings .
Alternatively , the trench may be backfilled to designed
elevations with engineered fill compacted under controlled
conditions .
It is recommended that the building be supported by
conventional spread or continuous footings . Depth of foundations
should be at least 36 inches below the lowest adjacent finished
grade. At this depth the allowable bearing pressure should not
exceed 1 , 500 psf due to dead load , and 2 , 000 psf for
The Foundadon Engineers, Inc.
