E
Ll
surveying the site perimeter as well as off-site areas if possible.
• If it is determined that odor impacts have occurred, they will be
addressed promptly.
• Every odor causing event will be documented for operational
review.
COMPLAINT RESPONSE PROTOCOL
All odor complaints should be brought to the attention of S.K.S.
management. Any S.K.S employee, delivery driver, neighbor(s), etc., should
state their concern of any odor(s) to the office immediately. The office
personnel will then contact the on-site facility manager(s) who will be
responsible for assessing where the odor is originating and what can be
done to eliminate it. A complaint log will be generated stating the time,
date, climate condition (hot, sunny, cold, raining, foggy, etc.), wind direction,
and source of odor for review and resolution of the problem if it persists.
OPERATING PROCEDURES TO MINIMIZE ODORS
In order to minimize the development of conditions that could lead to odor
problems, the compostable material handling areas of the site were chosen
based on their design, location, climatological factors, adjacent land use,
grading, and drainage controls.
The primary source of odor at the site occurs during the hot dry summer
months when the poultry manure sits in the storage ponds and bakes in the
sun. By composting the poultry manure produced on-site, the odors should
be reduced since; 1) poultry manure will be processed into compost daily, 2)
rapid drying and mixing of the manure will greatly reduce odors, and 3) the
waste storage pond will not be receiving liquefied poultry manure. The
sludge / solids in the small storage pond is in the process of being removed,
dried, and mixed into compost. Once this is complete the pond will no
longer be utilized for manure storage. The small storage pond will
eventually be filled in with clean fill dirt eliminating an odor causing agent.
All poultry manure is processed directly into compost rather than stored in
the ponds. The initial mixing of the poultry manure and the wood shavings
will have the highest odors mainly due to the freshness of the poultry
manure. Once the composting process continues, odors will be greatly
reduced. Site personnel will assess all delivered materials upon receipt, as
well as the compost product for any potential odor problems. Site
personnel have been trained to manage the compostable material in a
manner that will minimize the development of any conditions that could
lead to objectionable odors.
