Currently there are five piles of "product " housed in Honen # 9. They are described as
follows:
Pile 1) Wood shavings
Pile 2) Contains 7,000 crushed birds, poultry manure and wood shavings
Pile 3) Contains 7,000 crushed birds and poultry manure
Pile 4) Contains 7,000 crushed birds, poultry manure and wood shavings
Pile 5) Contains 7,000 crushed birds and poultry manure
Piles 2 and 3 were to be "turned" based on temperature decreasing, in theory,
sometime between day 10 — 14.
Piles 4 and 5 were to be "turned" every three days.
Mr. McClellon, we await your decision as to the disposition of the 4 compost piles of
material in Honen 9. SKS has the equipment on site to dispose of the material in
question to the landfill within 24 — 48 hours.
Having said this, I hope the poor decision making action on our part does not hinder our
ability to continue to proceed with your office on the compost protocol for future
consideration. The "window" for these types of operations is very limited. In addition,
the problem for handling "spent fowl' from layer operations will continue to be an ever -
greater problem in the future. The ability to handle and dispose the number of birds (>
100,000) through a rendering plant, landfill or incineration process will be impossible at
best. The only safe environmental handling of this many birds will be through proper
composting technique. Your help in this matter is very important to the Poultry Industry
in San Joaquin County as well as for the Industry across the state of California.
My cell number is 209 — 604 — 0381. 1 will be in the field for most of the week but will
make myself available should you need to speak with me regarding the current compost
issue at SKS Enterprises, Honen 9.
Respectively,
Mark C. Bland
CC: Dr. Dennis Wilson, CDFA
Dr. Dave Willoughby, CDFA
Rolando Calderon, SKS Production Manager
Michael Kith, RES San Joaquin County mkith@sicehd.com
