Trace compounds
are unlikely to exceed an amount that would significantly change the relative proportion of iron,
aluminum, and silicon in each waste type. Based on the above-listed information, the blast and
cutting wastes contain predominantly iron, and the slag waste contains significant amounts of
aluminum, silicon, and iron.
We understand that, although each waste type is containerized separately, the wastes are typically
combined when being transferred into larger containers provided by Herrick's waste management
contractor. Based on the volume of wastes accumulated in 2020, we understand that cutting waste
comprises the majority(about 55-75%), followed by blast waste(15-35%)and slag waste(5-20%).
When combined, these wastes would contain greater than 75%(by weight) of iron, aluminum, and
silicon.
The estimated concentration of iron, aluminum, and silicon indicate that the combined waste would
be a viable raw material for use in Portland cement manufacturing, when combined with other
calcareous raw materials. The cement manufacturer is responsible for combining the raw materials
at appropriate proportions to ensure the resulting cement product meets all pertinent requirements
of ASTM C150.
In addition, the material recycler is responsible for ensuring that the waste materials meet
requirements, if any, for raw materials established by the cement manufacturer. Also, the material
recycler should provide analytical data to demonstrate compliance with other pertinent provisions
in 22 CCR § 66266.21.
engineers I scientists I innovators
