Finished product
The finished compost product is placed into separate piles where it is either sold directly in
bulk, or mixed with other amendments to form specialized products. This material is
certified organic. It is sold to landscapers and agriculture. All material is sold well within
the six month required hold time. There is a higher demand than there is supply of the
finished compost.
The facility will receive a maximum of 156,000 tons per year of all materials to be composted
including the green, food, and agricultural residues.
In addition, gypsum or lime or similar material is delivered to the site on an as -needed basis to
be mixed with finished compost to create specialty products for agricultural customers.
A descriptive statement of the operations conducted at the facility
Receiving
The organic materials are delivered to site arrives in city/county refuse trucks, independent
haulers in 25 ton trucks and self haul pick-up trucks from independent landscapers. The trucks
arrive at the facility, are weighed in at the scale. The trucks then drive to the staging area,
located on the west side of the facility near the grinder. The loads are inspected for
contaminants including hazardous materials, household hazardous waste and other
unacceptable materials. If the load contains over the acceptable level of non-compostable
materials, it is rejected. Feedstock that is not separated or contains 1.0% or more physical
contamination by weight is mixed solid waste. After the initial inspection, any remaining,
smaller material is picked out by hand. For these incidental materials such as metal, plastic or
tocks, or treated wood, the materials separated and placed in a covered roll -off container or
similar containers. Any non-compostable material will be separated into labeled roll off
containers or dumpsters differentiated between and labeled as regular trash, treated wood
waste, other recyclables (plastic, metal, etc) and hazardous waste. This material will be taken
to the Forward Landfill in San Joaquin County on a weekly basis, or more often if required.
If pre-processed material (i.e., ground) is delivered to the facility, it will be directly off-loaded to
a designated location and placed into windrows for processing within 36 hours.
Unloading and Grinding
After the initial receiving process, the trucks are directed to the off-loading area and divided by
size and type of material. Any loads containing food scraps are immediately covered by green
material, or other high carbon material such as overs, wood chips or curing compost, to remove
the possibility of odor, vectors or birds, before incorporation into the composting process.
Grinding will occur to the west of a 14 foot berm/wall located in this area for noise
management purposes. The material is then immediately ground, processed and formed into
4
