location of the release and all soil sample locations can be found attached on Figure 2 and Figure
3.
1.1 Soil Sampling
All soil sampling equipment was thoroughly cleaned before and between sampling to prevent
cross contamination. Soil samples were collected by employing the use of a hand auger and
hand driven sampler. A total of nine (9) soil samples were collected, six(6) surface samples
were collected within the perimeter of the spill (S-1 thru S-6),two (2) samples were collected at
a depth of 2' below ground surface within the spill boundary(S-4@2' & S-5@2'), and one (1)
sample was collected outside the release area as a background sample (Background).
The samples were collected in a 1.5" diameter by 6" long stainless steel sleeves from relatively
undisturbed soils using a hand driven sampler. The laboratory samples did not have head space
and were immediately sealed in the liners using Teflon® lined plastic caps. The samples were
then logged on a Chain of Custody(Attachment B) and placed in an ice chest with Blue Ice®to
await transport to the laboratory. At no time were the samples opened by anyone other than
laboratory personnel.
The soil samples collected for analysis were analyzed using EPA method 8015B for Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbons (diesel range organics, kerosene range organics, mineral oil range
organics, and motor oil range organics), and EPA method 8270C for semi volatile organic
compounds (SVOC). Analyses was conducted by GeoAnalytical Laboratories, Inc., a State-
certified laboratory located in Turlock, California. An additional fish bioassay analysis was
conducted on a composite of soil samples S-2, S-3, S-4, and S-4@2' at Pacific Ecorisk
Environmental Consulting& Testing, located in Fairfield, California.
Due to the pesticide mix containing several products (three separate pesticides products, a liquid
micronutrient, and mineral oil)the above analysis was chosen to capture some of the known
products within the pesticide mix and to help determine which areas of the spill were most
heavily impacted. Following the initial analytical results, a fish bioassay analysis was conducted
on a composite of the four samples with elevated mineral oil in order to further evaluate the
potential impact to the surrounding environment.
2.0 Analytical Results
2.1 Soil Sample Results
All soil samples were free from all detectable levels of contamination for kerosene, motor oil,
diesel, and SVOC's. In addition, samples S-1, S-5, S-6, and S-5@2' were below the detection
limit for mineral oil. However, samples S-2, S-3, S-4, S-4@2', and the background sample all
contained detectable levels of mineral oil at 195mg/Kg,449mg/Kg, 338mg/Kg, 235mg/Kg, and
143mg/Kg respectively. Certificates of Analysis and Chain of Custody can be found attached in
Attachment B of this report, and the location of each soil sample is identified on Figure 3.
