z '1
Hazardous Waste Program
Introduction
A hazardous substance is any solid, liquid or gas that can threaten human health or the
environment. We have many products in our Pharmacy that are considered potentially
hazardous (e.g., Warfarin & Coumadin, Epinephrine, etc.). When safely used as intended,
these products typically do not pose a significant threat; however, they can be dangerous
when they become unsaleable.
"Unsaleable" product is any item that:
• Is damaged or broken to the point that it cannot offered for sale, and is of no actual value
• Has not been claimed (picked up) by the customer
• Is expired and has no credit value
• Has been dropped
• Is contaminated
• Cannot be used for its intended purpose
The moment a potentially hazardous product becomes unsaleable, it is considered
hazardous waste. This means it cannot be sent to reclamation or disposed of in the
trash, dumpster, baler or landfill.
To ensure the safety of our customers and employees, and comply with federal, state, and
local regulations, hazardous waste requires special handling. Any item deemed "hazardous
waste" must be:
• Bagged and labeled appropriately, then placed in a sealed container.
• Clearly segregated from all saleable product, recalls and product for reclamation.
• Stored in an area clearly identified for hazardous waste.
• Picked up, transported and disposed of by a fully -licensed hazardous materials vendor.
This Hazardous Waste Program Pharmacy Training Guide has been provided to ensure
Pharmacy employees are equipped to correctly process hazardous Pharmacy waste and
maintain compliance at all times,
564vE P1I6;dT $lOPEPiV(Ci@CE'r5 a
EP3'S'EPs®E8 Fps IFiiEl:P4RE.
