Activity: Drum Handling <br />Page 3 of 6 ACTIVITY HAZARD ANALYSIS 03 Drum Handling <br />Reviewed By: Analyzed By/Date: <br />Principal Steps Potential Hazards Recommended Controls <br />Heavy equipment. Site personnel will be instructed on Heavy <br />Equipment Awareness. Brightly colored safety <br />vests shall be donned at all times for personnel <br />working around heavy equipment. Stay free of <br />travel paths. <br />Ensure that eye contact has been established <br />with operator before walking/ working around <br />heavy equipment. <br />Do not stand under drums being lifted by forklift. <br />Exposure to high noise from <br />heavy equipment and power <br />tools. <br />SHSS will determine the need for hearing <br />protection and conduct monitoring, if needed. <br />Hearing protection will be worn while operating <br />or working near heavy equipment. <br />All equipment will be equipped with <br />manufacturer's required mufflers. <br />4. Opening of drums Dropped objects. Steel toe boots meeting ANSI Standard Z41 will <br />be worn <br />Biological hazards. Personnel will avoid contact with wildlife. <br />Be cautious of snakes and spiders around <br />drums. <br />Use of bung wrench or 15/16" <br />ratchet wrench to open drum <br />could cause a pinch hazard or <br />strain to worker <br />Do not use excessive force when using tool. <br />Often times it is best gradually "bump" the bung <br />or the bolt to "break" the seal and eventually the <br />opening becomes easier. <br />Wear leather work gloves when handling tool.
