ACTIVITY HAZARD ANALYSIS 03 Drum Handling Page 2 of 6 <br />Activity: Drum Handling Analyzed By/Date: <br /> <br />Reviewed By: <br /> <br />Principal Steps Potential Hazards Recommended Controls <br />Back injury from lifting heavy Handle drums slowly when unloading or loading <br />loads. Drums could "get away" onto trailer or truck — Avoid swinging of drums. <br />from person manually handling a Site personnel will be instructed on proper lifting <br />drum. techniques. <br />Drum lifting devices should be used to reduce <br />manual handling of materials. <br />Team lifting should be utilized if mechanical <br />devices are not available. <br />Use proper drum handling procedure when <br />moving a drum manually. Use a drum dolly. <br />If moving drums manually by "break and roll" <br />method use care to not tip the drum too close to <br />your body so that it could fall on you. <br />Remember if the drum starts falling, jump back! <br />It is better to let the drum fall than to risk injury <br />to yourself with a 400 lb drum. Ensure path is <br />clear of obstacles. <br />Pinch points/ crush potential. Wear leather gloves. <br />Avoid tipping drums while in congested areas. <br />Be cautious when placing drums into trailer or <br />into place on pad. <br />Do not stand between drums when lowering <br />onto truck — guide from the side.
